Are you seeing "Reload Software: 552" on your screen when starting up your Berry..?
This means your Berry OS has been corrupted (because of some app not shutting down properly and messing up the file index)..!
Time to reload the Blackberry device software…
Follow the steps I followed (edited & consolidated below) to restore the OS. While doing so, I also managed to upgrade my Curve 8900's OS to v5.0 from v4.6 :)
1. Download & Install BBSAK (BlackBerry Swiss Army Knife) application... Download it here http://bbsak.org/download.php
2. Make sure ALL YOUR data (i.e. contacts, appointments, memos and etc) are backed up or synced before proceeding..! This will wipe everything off the device.
3. Make sure you have the latest version of both Desktop Manager and the Handheld OS installed on your PC. If you need them then download them from here:
BlackBerry Desktop Manager

Handheld Operating System
http://goo.gl/LCFnu
http://goo.gl/ko9Bc
4. From the PC navigate to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file vendor.xml
Note: If you have never installed the Handheld OS before then the vendor.xml file will not be on the PC and you can skip this step
5. Plug the device into the PC using the USB cord and make sure Desktop Manager is closed
6. Run BBSAK and click on "Load OS" option
Steps are intuitive and easy to understand/follow
If an "Unable to connect to device" error comes up, click on IGNORE and proceed...
Read http://bbsak.org/features.php for more information on BBSAK
All the best...
